At Dee Why Pest Control we like to educate our customers so that they can take preventative measures to keep termites away from their homes and businesses. Termite damage can be costly, in some cases making a home or business unfit for living or business. The damage caused by termites is not always covered by general home or business insurance policies making it all the more important to take every measure in reducing your risk to termite infestation.

By following our tips below you can help reduce your risk of termite damage or infestation:

  1. Keep loose timber away from your home or business. Loose timber is like a red rag to a bull when it comes to termites. The termites start by feasting on the timber and then move on to your home once the timber is finished with. If you must store loose timber make sure it is stored on shelving high above the floor and away from soil or gardens, ideally in a concreted area such as a garage. A common oversight is leaving timber under your home in access areas. Some home or business owners don’t even realise there is timber down there. It is important to check that these areas are timber free.
  2. If possible keep gardens away from your home. Gardens touching the outside of the home are a prime location for termite highways used by the termite colonies to access your home. 90% of termite cases in Australia involve burrowing termite species that enter the home from garden beds or soil touching the home or business.
  3. Try to make sure areas around the building aren’t damp. Termites love damp soil and use these damp areas to enter the structure.
  4. Have a qualified pest control technician such as Rob here at Mosman Pest Control check your home or business for termites at least every six months. Termites can take only a few months to completely ruin your home or business making regular checks imperative.  If you are in a high risk area for termites an inspection every three months may be a better idea. These inspections can be coupled with inspections or pest control jobs involving other species of pests to keep costs down and help your home or business remain pest free. High risk areas include areas where termites have been found close by previously in homes or trees for example.
